Fitting the Madrone Pants

We all love the ease of some Big Pants Energy! This post will help you to think about intended fit and any changes that you may want to make to align with your personal fit needs!

The Madrone Pants are parachute-pants inspired, with curved seams providing dramatic yet soft shaping and very generous ease. The drawstring waist combined with waist elastic provides a comfortable and size-fluctuation-friendly fit that can accompany you through many seasons. We wanted a pair of pants that doesn’t need size-blending, can be present in your wardrobe through ebbs and flows, and is as steady and reassuring as sweatpants while providing an edgy and playful style!

The Madrone Pants have two inseam lengths: 26” (66 cm) and 28” (71 cm), and were drafted for a height of 5’5” (165 cm). The leg length is intended to hit the ankle, so the two inseam lengths allow for height variation without pattern changes. If you do need to refine your inseam length further, a blog post is available here to help you with it!

Take note that the ease in the waist, hip, and leg is designed to be dramatic and generous. It is encouraged to make your size according to the charts, and embrace the drama. Let your hip be the determining factor since the waist is personalized with elastic length and drawstring tying.

Excessive sizing down just to reduce leg or hip volume will cause fitting issues through the crotch! It’s important not to equate the fit of these pants with the Arthur pants, which have a dropped crotch. The Madrone Pants crotch curve is much more closely related to the crotch curve fit of the Chanterelle pants, so if you made fit adjustments to your Chanterelle Pants crotch curve, you may need to repeat them on the Madrone Pants, particularly if you increased the crotch extension or changed the shape of the curve to better suit your body.

If you want to confirm your sizing decision, haven’t made the Chanterelle pants, or often make significant pants fitting changes even on pull-on styles, making a muslin is a great idea. Muslins are like rough drafts – they let you figure out construction, check your fit, and generally have a practice run before you cut into the good fabric. They are very valuable research!

If making rise adjustments is a personal fit adjustment that you do often, please refer to this blog post for some extra help on this pattern. A little fancy footwork helps the pockets stay where they belong while giving you a personalized fit!
