A clean-lined and classic top, Joanie has a button front, cute breast pocket, and two collar options. Joanie is a perfect blank slate for a fabric that wants to take center stage, or as a classic compliment to some patched jeans or creative bottoms.

View A has a camp collar and button front. The fit is semi-fitted, with front bust darts and back yoke and princess seams. The high-hip length hem, split at the side seam, is slightly shorter at the front than the back. The cuffed sleeves have an easy fit that allow for comfortable movement and a playful silhouette.

Fabric and materials recommendations

We recommend a light- to medium-weight woven fabric that has no stretch. The drape or hand of the fabric will impact the look of the final garment – softer fabrics will fall more gently, and more stable fabrics like linen and cotton will emphasize the sleeve and collar shaping. Some wonderful choices are chambray, viscose-linen slub, sand-washed linen or cotton, cotton ikat, or even silk noil.

Fabric requirements

SIZES 0-24 VIEW A VIEW B
54” (137 cm) WIDE 1.7 yd (1.6 m) 3 yd (2.75 m)
45” (115 cm) WIDE 2.25 yd (2.1 m) 3 yd (2.75 m)
SIZES 26-34  VIEW A  VIEW B
54” (137 cm) WIDE 2.25 yd (2.1 m) 3 yd (2.75 m)
45” (115 cm) WIDE not wide enough*

* The sleeve is too wide for a folded cutting layout with 45″-wide fabric. If you have a 45”-wide fabric that you really want to make work, you’ll need 3.25 yd for View A and 4.5 yds for View B.

Other Materials

  • 1.5 yd (1.4 m) of lightweight fusible interfacing, either woven or non-woven. (An average width of interfacing is 20” (0.5 m).)
  •  Buttons, 1/2” (1.3 cm) in diameter. 4 or 5 buttons for View A, 8 to 10 buttons for View B.
  • Optional: Fray Check to seal buttonhole edges.
