The Nest Sweatshirt is suitable for advanced beginner sewists. Familiarity with sewing stable knit fabrics is recommended, especially for View A.
View A guides you through making your own sawtooth star quilt block. (Experienced quilters can insert their own block design.) The sweatshirt hems are turned back.
View B (without the quilt block) is perfect for color blocking, using a special piece of fabric, or adding a panel of embroidery. This view features knit cuffs and waistband finishes.

Finished Garment Measurements
* Sleeve length is measured from neck to wrist.
** The finished Back Length is measured from the center back neck.
For View A, we recommend a stable knit fabric, such as cotton interlock or mid-weight ponte. Birch Organic Cotton Interlock is a wonderful choice, weighing 6.6 oz/yard with a 60% crossgrain stretch and 20% stretch along the grain. Less crosswise grain stretch is acceptable as well, and will be easier to handle when you’re piecing the sawtooth star quilt block. View A has a pieced block on the front – this is an excellent opportunity to get creative with color, scraps, and hand stitching!
For View B, you can use similar mid-weight knits such as cotton interlock, ponte, and double knits as well as French terry, and tighter sweater knits.
All yardage is based on 58” (147 cm)-wide knit fabric.
View A
Sizes 0-24: 1.8 yd (1.7 m)
Sizes 26-34: 1.9 yd (1.75 m)
View B
Sizes 0-24: 2 yd (1.9 m)
Sizes 26-34: 2.2 yd (2 m)
For the quilt block, you’ll need approximately 17” x 24” (44 x 61 cm) fabric in total. It’s included in the requirements above (since it tucks in so nicely beside the sleeve!), so if you’re not making the Sawtooth Star block, you won’t need to purchase extra fabric. If you’re following the Sawtooth Star instructions, you’ll need approximately 9” x 17” (23 x 44 cm) of fabric A, 8” x 8” (20.5 x 20.5 cm) of fabric B, and 17” x 12” (44 x 30.5 cm) of fabric C. Specific cutting instructions for the Sawtooth Star follow the Cutting Diagrams.
