The Pinyon Pants

The Pinyon Pants are a utility-inspired, wide-leg pants pattern with a zipper fly, structured waistband, and 90s jeans-inspired details.

Views A and B have the same silhouette, with variations in the pockets.

View A’s pockets are flat, unlined, and have angled corners, with a pleat on the front pockets.

View B’s pockets have curved corners, darts, and are lined for tidy turning and application. It also includes a pencil pocket and hammer loop.

The Pinyon Pants pattern is suitable for intermediate sewists.

The Pinyon Pants sewing pattern includes pattern piece PDFs for printing at home or a print shop, in sizes 0-34.

The print-at-home files can be printed on letter- or A4-size paper. The print-shop files can be printed on A0-size paper, easily available at most print shops. The pattern also includes projector files for those who have a sewing projector setup.

Suggested Fabrics for the Pinyon Pants

Denim, twill, or canvas – or other bottom-weight fabric – with no stretch and a stable hand. Suggested weight range: 7 oz to 10 oz (237 to 339 GSM). View A may be made in up to 12 oz (407 GSM).

For View B’s pocket linings, light-weight cotton – lightweight and stable fabric like poplin, lawn, or quilting cotton – with no stretch and a stable hand. Suggested weight range: 3 oz to 4.2 oz (100 to 140 GSM).

Meg’s red Pinyons are made with a fine wale corduroy. Ashley’s are an 8oz Merchant and Mills denim. Meredith’s are Ventana Twill.

(For View B’s pocket linings, you will need an additional 1/2 yard (0.5 m) of 45” (114 cm)-wide fabric.)

Notions for the Pinyon Pants

  • 1/2 yd (0.5 m) lightweight fusible interfacing.
  • Zipper (nylon coil is easy to adjust and install), locking, #4 or #5, at least this long:
    • Sizes 0–6: 5.5” (14 cm)
    • Sizes 8-14: 6” (15.25 cm)
    • Sizes 16-20: 6.5” (16.5 cm)
    • Sizes 22-28: 7” (17.75 cm)
    • Sizes 30-34: 7.5” (19 cm)
  • One 3/4” (1.9 cm) jeans button
  • Jeans needle (size 14 or 16) for your machine.
